Granny Squares!

If you've been reading some other quilting blogs you've probably seen the Granny Square pattern being featured lately. Well, I have and it looked like something I'd definitely like to make!

So, without further adieu I'd like to present you with "Granny in the Springtime"...

This fabric is some of a HUGE stash of scraps that my sister-in-law, Carol has at her shop. These came just as you see 'em.



First, I laid them all out since they were rough cut enough to get a good idea of the finished product...

Next, they all needed to be cut down evenly. It seemed that 2 3/4"  would work for all pieces...

Once they were all cut, I sewed them into strips and YES, on my New Home using my new 1/4" foot...

Then, the strips were sewn together (how pretty is that!)

Time to square up the block...



And before you know it, you have yourself some Granny Squares...

I have to say, my New Home sewed wonderfully - so quiet and smooth with very nice stitches.

What a pretty project to have for its maiden voyage!

Some other blocks are laid out, ready to cut down and sew.

Busy Day

Today was a bit of a baking day...

An oldie but a goody! A favorite recipe book of mine. This was probably an auction find by my sister-in-law.

I have its twin, McCall'sCookie Collection which belonged to my grandmother.

Look at the artwork at the top of the page and the photos of each step! :)

 Here's the crust recipe that I used.

I'm running out of lard, so I haven't been using it for pies. If you do, remember to adjust your salt if need be.

This doubles just fine!

First pie up...

Here she is... (yes, she, because anything so beautiful has to be a 'she')



Mmmmm!  My favorite!



 I used four yolks in the filling, like the recipe calls for, but used 7 egg whites in the meringue and adjusted the sugar, etc. I like a nice high meringue and besides, what was I to do with the whites from this next pie?!

  



Used this recipe minus the meringue, add bananas and whipped cream



 This is actually a banana cream pie in the works.

It's got browning bananas on top because I didn't have any cream in the house. I'll pick some up on the way to Carol & Barry's and whip it there. 

 

Now, the little bit of sewing that got done today... 

 another block from the Shop Hop. It's called Winged Star...

Allentown Sewing Center's contribution to the Hop.

I know, I know this isn't done on my 'new' New Home, but instead on my Featherweight.

The thing there is that I really don't like sewing 1/4" seams without a 1/4" foot!

Spoiled, maybe.

Gonna have my way, definitely!

I have the guys at the White/Singer shop ordering me a foot. As soon as I get it I'll be using it. It runs great and so smooth. I really like using such a solid machine!

So, that was my day - besides meals, dishes, and running Sawyer to a basketball game (for 2 1/2 hours).

Pretty busy, I think!

This machine was graciously given to me by my sister-in-law, Carol.

It was given to her new by her husband-to-be when she was sixteen.

There's two boxes of goodies to go with it... one with some presser feet and plates

and the other with a full set of cams, 27 to be exact.

Can't wait to get stitching on it!

Just a Little Somethin'

Well, I haven't been terribly active in the sewing department... it's not that I don't have the itch!

I did manage to put together one block yesterday. Whoop-ee!

It's a Shop Hop block.




Take notice of the horizontal stripes...

Although the vertical stripes were in the pattern, I thought I would like the horizonal stripes better.

Moda Charm Packs

 

Part of a Christmas present to myself... these Charm Packs were irresistable!

I first went to Green Fairy Quilts to find "1862 Battle Hymn",

but when I got there... how could I not buy "Coming Home",

"Lil' Rascals" and "Towne Square Quilts"?!





The black print on these really stands out! Something about them says 1970's "Americana".

Boy, if only I would have come up with the

larger ones first.. I like them better,

but the small ones are cute, too!

Let Them Eat Cake

My nephew is turning 4 this Saturday and today is the big party at "Bounce U".

If you've never heard of the place... it's pretty cool. There are two rooms with various different inflated bounce houses including slides, basketball hoops, boxing ring and so on, and so on.

Here's his cake... colorful, but still flat and non-adventurous. I guess I will need to work on something 3D sometime soon.

Maybe Wyatt will want something cool for his birthday TOMORROW, yeah right! Like I would actually be up for that tomorrow! I'll make sure to make a cake for him none-the-less and he'll love it because that's the way he is!
